RIP Lloyd Brevett!
(August 1, 1931- May 3, 2012)
"It is his work on bass that has taken that instrument to prominence not only in Jamaican music, but also various other music forms including hip hop and dance music. Brevett popularised how we hear and understand that instrument in music today. He is the true father of the Jamaican bass" - Herbie Miller, Jamaica Music Museum.
Rasta Elder, pioneering double bassist, inventor of Ska and Dub music 'disenfranchised' in 2004 from The Skatalites, according to posting from family rep on Facebook. How is this possible? Bad decisions or robbery? Read more.>>> View his credits>> Seems like a game of crabs, swine, pearls, and the 'weasle' intent on undermining the legacy of this Rasta musician who labored over 6 decades to establish the bassline as the foundation of modern Jamaican music and dance moves.
We need answers! Bunny Wailer and former Columbia Records A&R person, Maxine Stowe, are leading the drive to recalim that which was wrongfully taken. Also, Jamaica's Office of the Public Defender and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are moving to protect the legacy of this pioneering bassman. Support the Lloyd Brevett Defense Fund to resolve this matter, now before the U.S. courts. The Skatalities must be preserved as a National Treasure, created by Rasta musicians in opposition to colonial and neo-colonialism, giving voice to descendants of slaves. It would be a sad day in the history of Jamaica music industry if the Skatalites 'trademark' ends up as the property of a 'sweet-talker' from New England who nuh know Warika Hills, Studio 1, King Tubby, Tower Hill nor Waterhouse. O' what a joy to hear the utterance and music of the Rastaman!>>>Join the Campaign!
